Session 3: Working with materials and values

First I opened the content browser by clicking on the content browser icon.

Then, under object type, I selected materials.

I then double clicked on a material to open the material editor.

I then minimised the material editor and went back to the content browser.  In the object type list I then selected the textures option.

I then double clicked a texture to open the texture properties box.

Now I have both the texture properties box and the material editor open.

Textures are just a reference for materials in UDK, and they can’t be applied to object.

The texture properties show specific information on console data.

The material editor is a lot more complicated than the texture properties.

The material editor is where the diffuse bump and alpha maps are stored. This allows great customisation and control over many aspects of the materials, such as colour and brightness.

This is the master node. This is where all of the texture samples are plugged into to provide the desired result.

The content browser is the most used part of UDK, so it is important we know our way around.

This is where you will see all of the content.

Applying Materials to a room

Next we want to see what a material looks like when applied to a room. First, we will type floor into the search bar of the Content Browser. Then, before pressing enter, tick the Materials box under object type.

floor

Now just drag and drop a material from the content browser onto the floor.

floormaterial

Your floor should look similar to the screenshot above. Now you can repeat the process above for the walls and ceiling. Just type wall into the search bar instead of floor.

When you have finished it should look similar to the screenshot below.
